Navigating Employee Wellbeing 2023 Report
NAVIGATING EMPLOYEE WELLBEING IN 2023 – A KENYAN PERSPECTIVE
The importance of employee wellbeing is increasingly becoming a priority for organizations in Kenya, with many offering a range of benefits to support the mental, physical, and financial health of their employees. A recent survey conducted by Samawati Wellness Ltd and Knightwise Human Capital Ltd between November 2022 and January 2023, 135 organizations participated, with 82% being private, 10% non-governmental, and 8% from the public sector.
The organizations ranged in size, with
- 16% having 2-50 employees
- 18% having 50-100 employees
- 35% having 100-500 employees
- 31% having 500 and above employees
The survey revealed several key insights, with one being that a hybrid work model is popular among organizations, with physical, financial, and psychosocial wellbeing benefits being the most common.
The top wellness benefits offered by organizations in Kenya, ranked in order of priority, are
- Physical wellbeing benefits such as regular team building, nutritional counselling, and gym & sports club membership;
- Financial wellbeing benefits including savings and retirement plans, and financial planning classes; and
- Psychosocial wellbeing benefits such as company therapists, toll-free counselling services, and 24-hour coaching support.
However, the survey also identified challenges associated with administering and managing these wellbeing benefits. Tailoring benefits to personal needs and preferences ranked highest at 56%, followed by demonstrating Return on Investment (ROI) at 51%, and keeping track of benefits uptake and consumption at 22%.
When purchasing wellness services, the most desired outcomes were:
- Building a culture of health and wellbeing (81%)
- Attracting and retaining talent (67%)
- Enhancing employee engagement (66%)
It’s clear that employers in Kenya are prioritizing employee wellbeing, recognizing the importance of allocating budgets as an investment to attract and retain talent, and drive employee engagement. Employers can also leverage technology to track the return on investment (RoI) and utilization of wellness benefits. Additionally, long-term employee wellness and assistance programs can help employers ensure sustainable outcomes and maintain an engaged and mentally well workforce.
